<abstract abstract-type="author-highlights" id="ab0010"> <title id="st0010">Highlights</title> <sec> <p id="sp0010"> <list id="ulist0010"> <list-item id="u0010"> <label></label> <p id="p0010">Imatinib is a molecular targeted drug that inhibits the activity of some tyrosine kinases including KIT.</p> </list-item> <list-item id="u0015"> <label></label> <p id="p0015">Dysregulation of kinases due to their mutation is found in some tumours in dogs and cats.</p> </list-item> <list-item id="u0020"> <label></label> <p id="p0020">In particular, dysregulation of KIT is found in canine and feline mast cell tumours.</p> </list-item> <list-item id="u0025"> <label></label> <p id="p0025">Imatinib has therapeutic activity towards a certain subset of canine and feline mast cell tumours.</p> </list-item> <list-item id="u0030"> <label></label> <p id="p0030">This activity is likely to be associated with the presence of <italic>KIT</italic> mutations.</p> </list-item> <list-item id="u0035"> <label></label> <p id="p0035">It would be beneficial to individualise imatinib treatment according to the mutational status of <italic>KIT</italic>.</p> </list-item> </list> </p> </sec> </abstract>
