Abstract

<abstract> <title> <x content-type="archive" xml:space="preserve">Abstract</x> </title> <p>In this study, spark plasma sintering technique was used as an alternative sintering method to densify the fluorine-substituted hydroxyapatite/zirconia composites. For comparison, composites with same compositions were also sintered by pressureless sintering at same temperatures. X-ray diffraction patterns showed that the composites fabricated by spark plasma sintering did not have noticeably thermal decomposition as compared with those prepared by pressureless sintering. A relative density of up to 95·6% theoretical density was accomplished by spark plasma sintering, whereas the highest relative density of pressureless sintered samples was only about 82·7%. Knoop hardness, Young's modulus and fracture toughness of the spark plasma sintering samples reached up to 8·23 GPa, 148·19 GPa and 3·37 MPa m^1/2, respectively, which were significantly higher than those of pressureless sintered samples.</p> </abstract>
