<abstract abstract-type="author-highlights" id="ab0010"> <title id="st0010">Highlights</title> <sec> <p id="sp0010"> <list id="ulist0010"> <list-item id="u0010"> <label></label> <p id="p0010">The effects of mitral regurgitation (MR) on selected serotonin 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) markers were evaluated in pigs.</p> </list-item> <list-item id="u0015"> <label></label> <p id="p0015">Haemodynamic changes associated with MR resulted in increased <italic>5-HT_2BR (R)</italic> and decreased <italic>serotonin re-uptake transporter (SERT)</italic> gene expression in mitral valves.</p> </list-item> <list-item id="u0020"> <label></label> <p id="p0020">MR may contribute to altered valvular 5-HT signalling and pathological valvular changes.</p> </list-item> </list> </p> </sec> </abstract>
