<abstract abstract-type="main"> <title> <x xml:space="preserve">Abstract</x> </title> <p>The record of fossil monocotyledonous pollen in New Zealand is summarized and discussed in terms of age and palaeoecological implications. The fossil monocot pollen record covers reports of taxa variously ranging from the Palaeogene to the present, with diverse groups represented, including Alstroemeriaceae: Luzuriagoideae (<italic>Luzuriaga</italic>), Amaryllidaceae (aff. <italic>Hymenocallis</italic>?), Arecaceae (including <italic>Nypa</italic> and aff. <italic>Metroxylon</italic>), Asparagaceae: Lomandroideae (<italic>Arthropodium</italic>, <italic>Cordyline</italic>), Asteliaceae (<italic>Astelia</italic> and <italic>Collospermum</italic>), Cyperaceae, Anarthriaceae (including Hopkinsiaceae and Lyginiaceae) or Flagellariaceae?, Orchidaceae, Pandanaceae, Poaceae, Restionaceae (aff. <italic>Empodisma</italic>), Ripogonaceae (<italic>Ripogonum</italic>), Typhaceae (<italic>Typha</italic> and <italic>Sparganium</italic>) and Asphodelaceae (= Xanthorrhoeaceae): Hemerocallidoideae (<italic>Dianella</italic> and <italic>Phormium</italic>). There are also monosulcate and reticulate lilioid and echinate and gemmate arecoid palynomorphs known from the Late Cretaceous.
