- <abstract abstract-type="graphical" xml:lang="en"> <title> <x xml:space="preserve">Abstract</x> </title> <p> <bold>The cover picture shows</bold> the competitive routes that can be taken to convert drug and other xenobiotic molecules in the body, and most importantly in the liver. Key biochemical pathways in these systems include the biotransformation of metabolites into either hydroxylated or desaturated products by cytochrome P450 enzymes. In their Full Paper on <ext-link ext-link-type="doi" xlink:type="simple" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">page 9083 ff</ext-link>. S. de Visser, W. Liu et al. address the fundamental questions: what drives the reaction toward hydroxylation or desaturation and what affects the bifurcation pathways? They reveal the mechanistic and electronic origin of these bifurcation pathways and propose a predictive model.
