<abstract abstract-type="author-highlights" id="abs0005"> <title id="sect0005">Highlights</title> <sec> <p id="spar0005"> <list id="lis0005"> <list-item id="lsti0005"> <label></label> <p id="par0005">Prognostication in advanced lung cancer is difficult due to limits of the TNM classification system.</p> </list-item> <list-item id="lsti0010"> <label></label> <p id="par0010">Performance status predicts survival however its subjective nature means it can be inaccurate.</p> </list-item> <list-item id="lsti0015"> <label></label> <p id="par0015">A simple inflammation based tool (mGPS) independently predicts survival in advanced lung cancer.</p> </list-item> <list-item id="lsti0020"> <label></label> <p id="par0020">The mGPS performs as well as performance status and has the advantage of being objective.</p> </list-item> <list-item id="lsti0025"> <label></label> <p id="par0025">The combination of mGPS and performance status improve accuracy of survival prediction.</p> </list-item> </list> </p> </sec> </abstract>
