Abstract

<abstract abstract-type="author" id="abs0005"> <title id="sect0005">Abstract</title> <sec> <p id="spar0005">Ameloblastic fibro-odontoma (AFO) is a rare, odontogenic tumor characterized by the histologic features of ameloblastic fibroma (AF) in conjunction with the presence of dentin and enamel. We report a case of AFO accompanied with a number of impacted teeth. The patient was a 16-year-old female who was referred to our hospital by her family dentist for the evaluation of a posterior right mandible lesion in June 2005. A radiographic examination showed a well-demarcated radiolucent lesion containing a few radiopaque masses in the right mandible. The crown of the right second deciduous molar and the first and second molars were contained within the lesion. An ameloblastic fibro-dentinoma (AFD) was suspected based on the histopathological diagnosis of a biopsy specimen, and tumor enucleation was performed under general anesthesia. Histopathologically, the surgical specimen showed proliferating narrow cords and small islands of the odontogenic epithelium in the mesenchymal cells and/or matrix. The hard tissue consisted of a dentinoid component and a few enamel matrices. These findings led to a diagnosis of AFO. No recurrence has been observed during the 8-year follow-up period.</p> </sec> </abstract>
