Abstract

<abstract abstract-type="main"> <title> <x xml:space="preserve">Abstract</x> </title> <p>Cyclones, which are used to separate particles from particle–gas mixtures by spinning movement of centrifugal forces, are stationary pieced devices, main advantages of which are their simplicity and also operability under heavy conditions such as high temperature and high pressure. From an engineering point of view, there are two important parameters in cyclones, namely the cyclone pressure loss and particle collection efficiency. In this work, three different vortex finders' diameters of 80, 120, and 160 mm were designed and fabricated to investigate experimentally the effects of various lengths of vortex finders, inlet velocities and concentrations of inlet particles on particle collection efficiency of preheat cyclones. Increases in all the operating parameters led to increases in the collection efficiency of all cyclones. Also, the experimental study clearly pointed out a critical diameter of vortex finder of 120 mm. <italic>© 2014 American Institute of Chemical Engineers Environ Prog, 2014</italic> 34: 669–673, 2015</p> </abstract>
