- <abstract abstract-type="graphical" xml:lang="en"> <title> <x xml:space="preserve">Abstract</x> </title> <p> <bold>The regio‐ and stereoselectivity</bold> of the carbolithiation of heterosubstituted alkynes depends on the heteroelement borne by the triple bond. If the heteroelement coordinates Li<sup>+</sup>, a 5‐<italic>exo</italic>‐<italic>dig anti</italic> addition is observed, and the product has an <italic>E</italic> configuration. The opposite pathway is followed if the lithium has no affinity for the substituent—the addition is <italic>syn</italic> and the product <italic>Z.</italic> Another deviance is observed with <italic>N</italic>‐phosphoryl ynamide for which cyclization evolves with a 6‐<italic>endo</italic>‐<italic>dig</italic> route. These competitive itineraries depend on the LiX affinity that acts as the primary driving force. The entangled bifurcations symbolized on the picture illustrate this point.
