- <abstract abstract-type="author-highlights" id="abs0005"> <title id="sect0005">Highlights</title> <sec> <p id="spar0005"> <list id="lis0005"> <list-item id="lsti0005"> <label></label> <p id="par0005">Adjuvants play important roles in modern vaccine formulations by acting as bridge between innate and adaptive immune responses. A useful adjuvant boosts the vaccine capacity by increasing cytokine production, antibody induction, class switching and delivery to the luminal surface, and uptake by M cells.</p> </list-item> <list-item id="lsti0010"> <label></label> <p id="par0010">Mucosal adjuvants can be divided into immunostimulators and vehicle delivery systems. Immunostimulatory adjuvants are able to activate innate immunity directly, while vehicle delivery systems protect antigens from harsh condition and target M-cells in mucosal surfaces.</p> </list-item> <list-item id="lsti0015"> <label></label> <p id="par0015">Targeting specific receptors on the surface of M cells by designed adjuvants may specifically increase the uptake and presentation of antigens, initiating the immune response and inducing protection against an infectious challenge.</p> </list-item> </list> </p> </sec> </abstract>
