<abstract abstract-type="author-highlights" id="abs0005"> <title id="sect0005">Highlights</title> <sec> <p id="spar0005"> <list id="lis0005"> <list-item id="lsti0005"> <label></label> <p id="par0005">The significance of HPV in the etiology of non-oropharyngeal head and neck cancers is uncertain.</p> </list-item> <list-item id="lsti0010"> <label></label> <p id="par0010">We analyzed the possible association of HPV infection with laryngeal and hypopharyngeal cancers.</p> </list-item> <list-item id="lsti0015"> <label></label> <p id="par0015">Only two cases (1.6%) were found positive for HPV; both contained HPV type 16.</p> </list-item> <list-item id="lsti0020"> <label></label> <p id="par0020">The proportion of laryngeal and hypopharyngeal cancers attributable to HPV seems to be very low.</p> </list-item> </list> </p> </sec> </abstract>
