<abstract abstract-type="author-highlights" id="ab0010"> <title id="st0010">Highlights</title> <sec> <p id="sp0010"> <list id="ulist0010"> <list-item id="u0010"> <label></label> <p id="p0010">Various molecular methods for identification and typing of ruminant coagulase negative staphylococci (CNS) are now available.</p> </list-item> <list-item id="u0015"> <label></label> <p id="p0015">Five CNS species cause the majority of CNS intramammary infections (IMI) in cows.</p> </list-item> <list-item id="u0020"> <label></label> <p id="p0020">In an ecological framework, some CNS species can be environmental and others host-adapted.</p> </list-item> <list-item id="u0025"> <label></label> <p id="p0025">In an epidemiological framework, some CNS IMI can be contagious and others opportunistic.</p> </list-item> <list-item id="u0030"> <label></label> <p id="p0030">Much is yet to be learned about the ecology and epidemiology of the different CNS species causing IMI in ruminants.</p> </list-item> </list> </p> </sec> </abstract>
