<abstract abstract-type="author-highlights" id="abs0005"> <title id="sect0005">Highlights</title> <sec> <p id="spar0005"> <list id="lis0010"> <list-item id="lsti0005"> <label></label> <p id="par0005">A communication tool was developed through focus groups and a pilot study was performed.</p> </list-item> <list-item id="lsti0010"> <label></label> <p id="par0010">The novel tool, the "MyInformer", was then evaluated in four Emergency Department settings.</p> </list-item> <list-item id="lsti0015"> <label></label> <p id="par0015">Patient satisfaction with communication and comprehension of care was not affected.</p> </list-item> <list-item id="lsti0020"> <label></label> <p id="par0020">Greater comprehension defects were seen in elderly and extremely elderly patients.</p> </list-item> </list> </p> </sec> </abstract>
