<abstract abstract-type="author-highlights" id="abs0005"> <title id="sect0005">Highlights</title> <sec> <p id="spar0005"> <list id="lis0005"> <list-item id="lsti0005"> <label></label> <p id="par0005">We study the TMJ of California sea lions in a museum collection of skull specimens.</p> </list-item> <list-item id="lsti0010"> <label></label> <p id="par0010">California sea lions have high occurrence (63.5%) of osteoarthritis of the TMJ.</p> </list-item> <list-item id="lsti0015"> <label></label> <p id="par0015">There is no association between age and sex with the presence or severity of TMJ-OA.</p> </list-item> <list-item id="lsti0020"> <label></label> <p id="par0020">TMJ-OA is present at the mandibular head and affects the entire articular surface.</p> </list-item> <list-item id="lsti0025"> <label></label> <p id="par0025">The high incidence of TMJ-OA is likely to affect morbidity and mortality.</p> </list-item> </list> </p> </sec> </abstract>
