<abstract abstract-type="author-highlights" id="abs0005"> <title id="sect0005">Highlights</title> <sec> <p id="spar0005"> <list id="lis0005"> <list-item id="lsti0005"> <label></label> <p id="par0005">There is a considerable mast cell infiltrate in kidneys in renal inflammatory disease in humans.</p> </list-item> <list-item id="lsti0010"> <label></label> <p id="par0010">Examinations in mast cell or mast cell protease deficient mouse models are discussed.</p> </list-item> <list-item id="lsti0015"> <label></label> <p id="par0015">These reveal a highly contrasting picture with both beneficial and disease aggravating actions.</p> </list-item> <list-item id="lsti0020"> <label></label> <p id="par0020">Sometimes the action of mast cells differs from the one observed with a mast cell protease suggesting that mast cell mediators released at the same time can have opposite activities.</p> </list-item> </list> </p> </sec> </abstract>
