- <abstract abstract-type="main" xml:lang="en"> <title> <x xml:space="preserve">Abstract</x> </title> <sec id="clen201200254-sec-0001" sec-type="section"> <p>Studies on removal of nutrients from domestic wastewater using water hyacinth <italic>(Eichhornia crassipes)</italic> and water lettuce <italic>(Pista stratiotes)</italic> were conducted. The plants were grown in 68 L of wastewater with 21‐day retention period in fiber‐glass tanks with another similar tank as control. <italic>Eichhornia</italic><italic>crassipes</italic> performed better than <italic>P. stratiotes</italic> in reducing the concentrations of nitrate‐nitrogen and <italic>ortho</italic>‐phosphates while <italic>P. stratiotes</italic> performed better than <italic>E. crassipes</italic> in reducing the concentrations of ammoniacal‐nitrogen (NH<sub>4</sub>‐N) and nitrite‐nitrogen. On average, <italic>E. crassipes</italic> reduced the NH<sub>4</sub>‐N concentration by 72%, <italic>P. stratiotes</italic> reduced the concentration by 83% and the concentration in the control was reduced by 95%. On average, <italic>E. crassipes</italic> reduced the phosphate concentration by 55%, <italic>P. stratiotes</italic> reduced the concentration by 60% and the concentration in the control increased by 28%. Algae significantly reduced the concentration of NH<sub>4</sub>‐N.</p> </sec> </abstract>
