- <abstract abstract-type="main" xml:lang="en"> <title>Abstract</title> <p>Phytochemical investigation of the CHCl<sub>3</sub> fraction of <italic>Swertia corymbosa</italic> resulted in the isolation of a new 3‐allyl‐2, 8‐dihydroxy‐1, 6‐dimethoxy‐9<italic>H</italic>‐xanthen‐9‐one (<bold>1</bold>), along with four known xanthones, gentiacaulein (<bold>3</bold>), norswertianin (<bold>4</bold>), 1, 3, 6, 8‐tetrahydroxyxanthone (<bold>5</bold>), and 1, 3‐dihydroxyxanthone (<bold>6</bold>). Structure of compound <bold>1</bold> was elucidated with the aid of IR, UV, NMR, and MS data, and chemical transformation <italic>via</italic> new allyloxy xanthone derivative (<bold>2</bold>). Compounds <bold>1</bold>–<bold>6</bold> exhibited various levels of antioxidant and anti‐<italic>α</italic>‐glucosidase activities. Absorption and fluorescence spectroscopic studies on <bold>1</bold>–<bold>6</bold> indicated that these compounds could interact with calf thymus DNA (CT‐DNA) through intercalation and with bovine serum albumin (BSA) in a static quenching process. Compound <bold>1</bold> was found to be significantly cytotoxic against human cancer cell lines HeLa, HCT116, and AGS, and weakly active against normal NIH 3T3 cell line.</p> </abstract>
