- <abstract abstract-type="main" id="syen12101-abs-0001"> <title>Abstract</title> <p id="syen12101-para-0001"> <italic>Priocnemella</italic> Banks is a small Neotropical genus within Ageniellini with remarkable morphological variation between species. Some species are small and variable in colour, whereas others are large with black integument and yellow wings. We conducted a phylogenetic analysis of <italic>Priocnemella</italic> based on the mitochondrial gene cytochrome oxidase I and the nuclear marker long‐wavelength rhodopsin. Our results indicated that <italic>Priocnemella</italic> is a paraphyletic genus. Based on molecular phylogenetic analyses, we discuss the taxonomic validity of <italic>Priocnemella</italic>, its implications and a new circumscription of genera of Ageniellini. <italic>Eragenia</italic> Banks is revalidated (<bold>stat. rev.</bold>) and applied to 16 species, eight of which are newly described: <italic>Eragenia bella</italic> Waichert &amp; Pitts <bold>sp.n.</bold>, <italic>E. carinata</italic> Waichert &amp; Pitts <bold>sp.n.</bold>, <italic>E. dentata</italic> Waichert &amp; Pitts <bold>sp.n.</bold>, <italic>E. oliva</italic> Waichert &amp; Pitts <bold>sp.n.</bold>, <italic>E. pseudomicans</italic> Waichert &amp; Pitts <bold>sp.n.</bold>, <italic>E. setosa</italic> Waichert &amp; Pitts <bold>sp.n.</bold>, <italic>E. rotunda</italic> Waichert &amp; Pitts <bold>sp.n.</bold>, <italic>E. villosa</italic> Waichert &amp; Pitts <bold>sp.n.</bold>,<abstract abstract-type="main" id="syen12101-abs-0001"> <title>Abstract</title> <p id="syen12101-para-0001"> <italic>Priocnemella</italic> Banks is a small Neotropical genus within Ageniellini with remarkable morphological variation between species. The following nomenclatural changes are proposed: <italic>Priocnemella rufothorax</italic> (Banks) is synonymized under <italic>Eragenia micans</italic> (Fabricius) (<bold>syn. n.</bold>); <italic>Priocnemella delila</italic> (Banks), <italic>Priocnemella bequaerti</italic> (Banks) and <italic>Priocnemella infelix</italic> (Banks) are junior synonyms of <italic>Eragenia aureicornis</italic> (Smith) (<bold>syn.n.</bold>) (<bold>comb.n</bold>). New combinations are proposed for <italic>Eragenia aureicornis</italic> (Smith) <bold>comb.n.</bold>, <italic>Eragenia abdominalis</italic> (Smith) <bold>comb.n.</bold> and <italic>Eragenia coerulipes</italic> (Smith) <bold>comb.n.</bold> from <italic>Agenia</italic>; and <italic>Eragenia congrua</italic> (Fox) <bold>comb.n.</bold> from <italic>Salius</italic>. A neotype is designated for <italic>E. coerulipes</italic> and for <italic>E. tabascoensis.</italic> Divergence dates between species of <italic>Eragenia</italic>, ancestral areas and pattern of dispersal that shaped the current geographic distribution are discussed. The genus is about 9.8 Ma old, originating in Mesoamerica during the Miocene.
