- <abstract abstract-type="main" id="hesr12209-abs-0001"> <title> <x xml:space="preserve">Abstract</x> </title> <sec id="hesr12209-sec-0001" sec-type="section"> <title>Objective</title> <p>To compare methods of characterizing intensive care unit (ICU) bed use and estimate the number of beds needed.</p> </sec> <sec id="hesr12209-sec-0002" sec-type="section"> <title>Study Setting</title> <p>Three geographic regions in the Canadian province of Manitoba.</p> </sec> <sec id="hesr12209-sec-0003" sec-type="section"> <title>Study Design</title> <p>Retrospective analysis of population‐based data from April 1, 2000, to March 31, 2007.</p> </sec> <sec id="hesr12209-sec-0004" sec-type="section"> <title>Methods</title> <p>We compared three methods to estimate ICU bed requirements. Method 1 analyzed yearly patient‐days.
