Abstract

<abstract abstract-type="graphical" xml:lang="en" id="boc201400078-abs-0001"> <title>Research article</title> <p>We present the full protein coding sequence of the chicken Atonal homologue 1. In this study, we clone the open reading frame of cAtoh1, demonstrating that the sequence of cAtoh1 is divergent from that of its mammalian homologues and that cAtoh1 is necessary and sufficient for hair cell differentiation in the chicken ear. Furthermore, we show that cAtoh1 shares similar properties with its human homologue in the mouse inner ear. However, when overexpressed in combination with Sox2 in the mouse cochlea, cAtoh1 is able to overcome Sox2‐mediated antagonism more effectively than human Atoh1. <boxed-text content-type="graphic" position="anchor" orientation="portrait"><graphic position="anchor" mimetype="image" xlink:href="ark:/27927/pgh3k733pvm" orientation="portrait" xlink:type="simple" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink" /></boxed-text></p> </abstract>
