- <abstract> <title> <x content-type="archive" xml:space="preserve">Abstract</x> </title> <p>The spinel Co<sub>0·8−x</sub>Cu<sub>x</sub>Zn<sub>0·2</sub>Fe<sub>2</sub>O<sub>4</sub> (<italic>x</italic> = 0, 0·1, 0·2, 0·3, 0·4) ferrites and polypyrrol(PPy)-Co<sub>0·7</sub>Cu<sub>0·1</sub>Zn<sub>0·2</sub>Fe<sub>2</sub>O<sub>4</sub> nanocomposites were prepared by self-propagating combustion method and an <italic>in situ</italic> polymerisation method respectively. The structure, morphology, dielectric, magnetic and microwave absorbing capability of samples were characterised. The results show the average diameter of the Co<sub>0·7</sub>Cu<sub>0·1</sub>Zn<sub>0·2</sub>Fe<sub>2</sub>O<sub>4</sub> ferrites and PPy-Co<sub>0·7</sub>Cu<sub>0·1</sub>Zn<sub>0·2</sub>Fe<sub>2</sub>O<sub>4</sub> nanocomposites is about 15 and 50 nm respectively. In the frequency range of 5·0–20·0 GHz, the reflection loss of the PPy-Co<sub>0·7</sub>Cu<sub>0·1</sub>Zn<sub>0·2</sub>Fe<sub>2</sub>O<sub>4</sub> is between −16·25 and −20·27 dB, and the maximum value is about −20·27 dB at 18·0 GHz with a bandwidth of 2·0 GHz, which is obviously higher than that of the ferrites. The saturation magnetisation (<italic>M</italic><sub>s</sub>) and residual magnetisation (<italic>M</italic><sub>r</sub>) of the PPy-Co<sub>0·7</sub>Cu<sub>0·1</sub>Zn<sub>0·2</sub>Fe<sub>2</sub>O<sub>4</sub> are 1·29 and 0·43 emu g<sup>−1</sup>, which are smaller than those of the ferrites.
