<abstract abstract-type="synopsis" xml:lang="en" id="emmm201303708-abs-0002"> <title>Synopsis</title> <p> <boxed-text content-type="graphic" id="emmm201303708-blkfxd-0001" position="anchor" orientation="portrait"> <graphic position="anchor" mimetype="image" xlink:href="ark:/27927/pgg5nprc2fk" orientation="portrait" xlink:type="simple" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink" /> </boxed-text> </p> <p>A locally delivered, bifunctional recombinant "Sticky‐trap" comprising a VEGF‐trap and a heparin‐binding domain (HBD) can prevent aberrant ocular angiogenesis without affecting systemic physiological VEGF‐processes.</p> <p> <list id="emmm201303708-list-0001" list-type="bullet"> <list-item> <p>Bifunctional "Sticky‐trap" is comprised of VEGF‐trap and a carboxy‐terminal HBD.</p> </list-item> <list-item> <p>Treatment with recombinant Sticky‐trap can prevent the development of abnormal ocular angiogenesis.</p> </list-item> <list-item> <p>Sticky‐trap remains at the site of delivery; thus, it has a local antiangiogenic activity.</p> </list-item> <list-item> <p>Sticky‐trap applied in the eye does not compromise systemic physiological VEGF‐processes, such as wound healing and kidney function.</p> </list-item> </list> </p> </abstract>
