- <abstract abstract-type="graphical" xml:lang="en"> <title> <x xml:space="preserve">Abstract</x> </title> <p> <bold>Device‐scale thin films of highly oriented (in‐plane) colloidal nanorods</bold> are made available by using a simple coating process involving thixotropic rod gel suspensions. Application of this process to LaPO<sub>4</sub> nanorods leads to films exhibiting outstanding anisotropic optical properties, such as a remarkably large birefringence (Δ<italic>n</italic> = 0.13) associated with high transparency, and sharply polarized fluorescence spectra when doped with europium. <boxed-text content-type="graphic" position="anchor" orientation="portrait"><graphic position="anchor" mimetype="image" xlink:href="ark:/27927/pgg2240mnmj" orientation="portrait" xlink:type="simple" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink" /></boxed-text></p> </abstract>
