<abstract abstract-type="graphical" xml:lang="en"> <title> <x xml:space="preserve">Abstract</x> </title> <p> <bold>Tandem fluorogenic reaction</bold>: A new platform for the direct, selective and sensitive detection of formaldehyde and/or secondary aliphatic amines, based on a tandem Mannich–electrophilic amination reaction, is described. Biological applications of hydrophilic, water‐soluble fluorescent 2, 2‐dialkyl‐2, 3‐dihydro‐[1, 2, 4]triazolo[4, 3‐<italic>a</italic>]pyridin‐2‐ium‐8‐carboxylates (<italic>Safarinium P</italic> probes) are exemplified by labeling of the amine‐containing Ac‐AKF‐NH₂ peptide and <italic>Bacillus subtilis</italic> spores in aqueous solution.<boxed-text content-type="graphic" position="anchor" orientation="portrait"><graphic position="anchor" mimetype="image" xlink:href="ark:/27927/pgg36r46bnr" orientation="portrait" xlink:type="simple" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink" /></boxed-text></p> </abstract>
