<abstract abstract-type="main"> <title> <x xml:space="preserve">Abstract</x> </title> <p>Overshadowed by the large‐scale and often exaggerated architectural expressions produced by architectural firms with a global reach, the work of local practices in the Gulf has not gained widespread recognition for alternative approaches to the context. Here Guest‐Editors <bold>George Katodrytis and Kevin Mitchell</bold> profile the work of four emerging studios – dxb.lab, X‐Architects and SHAPE Architecture Practice and Research, based in the UAE, and AGi Architects, with offices in Kuwait and Spain – highlighting the challenges that indigenous studios in the region encounter.</p> </abstract>
