<abstract abstract-type="graphical" xml:lang="en" id="ece31277-abs-0002"> <title> <x xml:space="preserve">Abstract</x> </title> <p>The role of indirect effects in trait evolution remains poorly understood. We show that plant chemical traits indirectly affect ant colony fitness and behavior via direct interactions with aphids.
