Abstract

<abstract abstract-type="main"> <title>Abstract</title> <sec id="jspn12081-sec-0001" sec-type="section"> <title>Purpose</title> <p>Conduct a systematic review of school‐based interventions to promote physical activity in preschoolers.</p> </sec> <sec id="jspn12081-sec-0002" sec-type="section"> <title>Design and Methods</title> <p>A systematic search of literature between 2002 and 2014 in nine electronic databases and reference lists was conducted using the terms <italic>physical activity</italic> combined with <italic>environment</italic>, <italic>children</italic>, or <italic>interventions</italic>.</p> </sec> <sec id="jspn12081-sec-0003" sec-type="section"> <title>Results</title> <p>Fourteen articles were identified. Interventions were environmental, cognitive/behavioral, or a combination. Positive interventions involving preschool children included manipulation of the playground with the number of children playing at one time, markings, or equipment, and goal setting and reinforcement.</p> </sec> <sec id="jspn12081-sec-0004" sec-type="section"> <title>Practice Implications</title> <p>More research is needed to determine interventions to promote physical activity in preschool children.</p> </sec> </abstract>
