<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en" id="bjd13037-abs-0002"> <title> <x xml:space="preserve">Abstract</x> </title> <p> <bold>What's already known about this topic?</bold> </p> <p> <list id="bjd13037-list-0001" list-type="bullet"> <list-item> <p>Limonene and linalool auto‐oxidize upon exposure to air and their oxidation products can cause contact allergy.</p> </list-item> <list-item> <p>A significant rate of allergy to oxidized limonene and linalool has been shown in multicentre European studies and one small, single‐centre U.K. study.</p> </list-item> </list> </p> <p> <bold>What does this study add?</bold> </p> <p> <list id="bjd13037-list-0002" list-type="bullet"> <list-item> <p>This is the first multicentre audit to show a significant rate of allergy to oxidized terpenes throughout the U.K.</p> </list-item> <list-item> <p>There is a high rate of irritant reactions to the oxidized terpenes.</p> </list-item> <list-item> <p>We recommend that oxidized limonene and linalool be added to an extended baseline patch test series in the U.K.</p> </list-item> <list-item> <p>The optimum concentration of the terpene hydroperoxides for patch testing has yet to be determined.</p> </list-item> </list> </p> </abstract>
