- <abstract abstract-type="main"> <title> <x xml:space="preserve">Abstract</x> </title> <sec id="avj12203-sec-0001" sec-type="section"> <title>Objective</title> <p>To determine the presence and estimate the prevalence of <italic>Brucella suis</italic>, <italic>Leptospira interrogans</italic> serovar Pomona (hereafter <italic>L. pomona</italic>) and <italic>Leptospira borgpetersenii</italic> serovar Hardjo (hereafter <italic>L. hardjo</italic>) in feral pigs culled in New South Wales (NSW), Australia.</p> </sec> <sec id="avj12203-sec-0002" sec-type="section"> <title>Methods</title> <p>During 2012 and 2013, 239 serum samples were collected from feral pigs killed as pests or game in NSW. All sera were subjected to the rose‐bengal test for <italic>B. suis</italic>, with positives subjected to the complement fixation test (CFT). Attempts were made to detect <italic>B. suis</italic> by culture and PCR on CFT‐positive samples. All sera were tested separately for the presence of <italic>L. pomona</italic> and <italic>L. hardjo</italic> antibodies using the microscopic agglutination test.</p> </sec> <sec id="avj12203-sec-0003" sec-type="section"> <title>Results</title> <p>Of 238 samples tested, 7 were positive (4 with CFT titres ≥ 32) for <italic>B. suis</italic> antibodies (3% seroprevalence). However, <italic>B. suis</italic> was not cultured or detected by PCR. The increased seroprevalence of <italic>L. pomona</italic> occurred in years preceded by flooding and rodent plagues, suggesting a potential for zoonotic infection much greater than previously realised. Advice to the community should focus on encouraging the adoption of improved hygiene practices during pig hunting and consideration of vaccinating livestock against leptospirosis.</p> </sec> </abstract> … (more)
