- <abstract abstract-type="graphical" xml:lang="en"> <title> <x xml:space="preserve">Abstract</x> </title> <p> <bold>A heteroleptic Fe<sup>II</sup> complex</bold> combining benchmark 2, 2′‐bipyridine and strongly σ‐donating N‐heterocyclic carbene mesoionic ligands destabilizes the metal‐centered (MC) states relative to the metal‐to‐ligand charge transfer (<sup>3</sup>MLCT) state, resulting in a 13 ps <sup>3</sup>MLCT lifetime. The potential energy surfaces show a deactivation pathway via the strongly singlet ground‐state (GS)‐coupled <sup>3</sup>MC state instead of the typical Fe<sup>II 5</sup>MC state, which is effectively removed from the excited state deactivation region, as reported by K. Wärnmark, V.
