- <abstract abstract-type="graphical" xml:lang="en"> <title> <x xml:space="preserve">Abstract</x> </title> <p> <bold>A long‐standing problem</bold> in the synthesis of A<sub>3</sub>B‐, A<sub>2</sub>B<sub>2</sub>‐, or AB<sub>2</sub>C‐porphyrins, the scrambling of the intermediate porphyrinogens formed by the condensation of pyrrole with at least two different aldehydes, has now been circumvented by using an environmentally friendly experimental procedure. T. S. Balaban, D. T. Gryko and their co‐workers describe in the Full Paper on <ext-link ext-link-type="doi" xlink:type="simple" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">page 1488 ff.</ext-link> the optimization of a water‐based synthesis using either EtOH or THF as co‐solvent and HCl as the catalyst. This procedure was discovered independently in Marseille and Warsaw for both <italic>meso‐</italic>arylporphyrins, which are usually purple, or <italic>meso</italic>‐arylethynylporphyrins, which, due to the extended π system, are green and have potential applications such as in nonlinear optics or photodynamic therapy.<boxed-text content-type="graphic" position="anchor" orientation="portrait"><graphic position="anchor" mimetype="image" xlink:href="ark:/27927/pgh372nj8p7" orientation="portrait" xlink:type="simple" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink" /></boxed-text></p> </abstract>
