<abstract abstract-type="graphical" xml:lang="en"> <title> <x xml:space="preserve">Abstract</x> </title> <p> <bold>The inside cover picture shows</bold> a methionine γ‐lyase that produces methanethiol for the biosynthesis of calicheamicins in <italic>Micromonospora echinospora.</italic> Although the enzyme's high sequence and structure similarity to cystathionine γ‐lyases and γ‐synthases have made previous investigations difficult, on <ext-link ext-link-type="doi" xlink:type="simple" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">p. 100 ff.</ext-link>, Z.
