- <abstract abstract-type="main" xml:lang="en"> <title>Abstract</title> <p>The crystal structures of a series of pyridine coordination polymers [<italic>M</italic><sup>II</sup>Cl<sub>2</sub>(C<sub>5</sub>H<sub>5</sub>N)<italic><sub>x</sub></italic>]<italic><sub>n</sub></italic> (<italic>M</italic> = Ni, Cu), prepared via thermal decomposition are reported. [NiCl<sub>2</sub>(C<sub>5</sub>H<sub>5</sub>N)<sub>4</sub>] (<bold>1</bold>) decomposes stepwise via [NiCl<sub>2</sub>(C<sub>5</sub>H<sub>5</sub>N)<sub>2</sub>]<italic><sub>n</sub></italic> (<bold>2</bold>), [NiCl<sub>2</sub>(C<sub>5</sub>H<sub>5</sub>N)]<italic><sub>n</sub></italic> (<bold>3</bold>), and [NiCl<sub>2</sub>(C<sub>5</sub>H<sub>5</sub>N)<sub>2/3</sub>]<italic><sub>n</sub></italic> (<bold>4</bold>), to NiCl<sub>2</sub> with increasing temperature. The thermal decomposition of [CuCl<sub>2</sub>(C<sub>5</sub>H<sub>5</sub>N)<sub>2</sub>]<italic><sub>n</sub></italic> (<bold>5</bold>), progresses via two polymorphs of [CuCl<sub>2</sub>(C<sub>5</sub>H<sub>5</sub>N)]<italic><sub>n</sub></italic> (<bold>6a</bold> and <bold>6b</bold>), and [CuCl<sub>2</sub>(C<sub>5</sub>H<sub>5</sub>N)<sub>2/3</sub>]<italic><sub>n</sub></italic> (<bold>7</bold>), to CuCl<sub>2</sub>. The compounds <bold>3</bold>, <bold>4</bold>, and <bold>7</bold> were prepared as pure phases. All crystal structures were determined by X‐ray powder diffraction. Notably, the crystal structures of the polymorphs <bold>6a</bold> and <bold>6b</bold> were determined from powder diffraction data of a mixture of both phases. Crystal structures of [<italic>M</italic><sup>II</sup>Cl<sub>2</sub>(C<sub>5</sub>H<sub>5</sub>N)<italic><sub>x</sub></italic>]<italic><sub>n</sub></italic> with the same <italic>x</italic>, but different metal atoms (Ni, Cu) are homeotypic, compounds <bold>4</bold> and <bold>7</bold> are isotypic. Compounds with <italic>x</italic> = 1 (<bold>3</bold>, <bold>6a</bold>, <bold>6b</bold>) are composed of polymeric octahedra double chains <sup>1</sup><sub>∞</sub>[<italic>M</italic>Cl<sub>3/3</sub>Cl<sub>2/2</sub>(C<sub>5</sub>H<sub>5</sub>N)] and in case of <italic>x</italic> = 2/3 (<bold>4</bold>, <bold>7</bold>) of triple chains. The Jahn‐Teller distortion in the copper compounds was observable with the pair distribution function (PDF) analysis.</p> </abstract> … (more)
