<abstract abstract-type="graphical" xml:lang="en" id="ece31308-abs-0002"> <title> <x xml:space="preserve">Abstract</x> </title> <p>The Variable Checkerspot, <italic>Euphydryas chalcedona</italic>, occurs in a palatable red form and an unpalatable black form (shown). The Northern Checkerspot is a palatable Female‐limited Batesian mimic of the Variable Checkerspot.
