- <abstract abstract-type="main" xml:lang="en"> <title>Abstract</title> <sec id="jipb12290-sec-0001" sec-type="section"> <p>Somatic embryogenesis receptor kinase (SERK) proteins play pivotal roles in regulation of plant development and immunity. The rice genome contains two SERK genes, <italic>OsSerk1</italic> and <italic>OsSerk2</italic>. We previously demonstrated that <italic>OsSerk2</italic> is required for rice <italic>Xa21</italic>‐mediated resistance to <italic>Xanthomonas oryzae</italic> pv. <italic>oryzae</italic> (<italic>Xoo</italic>) and for normal development. Here we report the molecular characterization of <italic>OsSerk1</italic>. Overexpression of <italic>OsSerk1</italic> results in a semi‐dwarf phenotype whereas silencing of <italic>OsSerk1</italic> results in a reduced angle of the lamina joint. <italic>OsSerk1</italic> is not required for rice resistance to <italic>Xoo</italic> or <italic>Magnaporthe oryzae</italic>. Overexpression of <italic>OsSerk1</italic> in <italic>OsSerk2</italic>‐silenced lines complements phenotypes associated with brassinosteroid (BR) signaling defects, but not the disease resistance phenotype mediated by <italic>Xa21</italic>. In yeast, OsSERK1 interacts with itself forming homodimers, and also interacts with the kinase domains of OsSERK2 and BRI1, respectively. OsSERK1 is a functional protein kinase capable of auto‐phosphorylation <italic>in vitro</italic>.
