Abstract

<abstract abstract-type="main"> <title>ABSTRACT</title> <sec id="jogn12486-sec-0010" sec-type="section"> <title>Objective</title> <p>To characterize communication strategies of labor and delivery nurses and their physician colleagues during perinatal decisions.</p> </sec> <sec id="jogn12486-sec-0020" sec-type="section"> <title>Design</title> <p>A quantitative descriptive design was used.</p> </sec> <sec id="jogn12486-sec-0030" sec-type="section"> <title>Setting</title> <p>A perinatal setting in an urban acute care facility.</p> </sec> <sec id="jogn12486-sec-0040" sec-type="section"> <title>Participants</title> <p>Twenty‐nine perinatal nurses and 11 attending physicians.</p> </sec> <sec id="jogn12486-sec-0050" sec-type="section"> <title>Methods</title> <p>A model of team communication derived from research on cockpit crew communication served as a framework for this analysis. Data were taken from transcriptions of audio‐taped conversations and discourse analysis.</p> </sec> <sec id="jogn12486-sec-0060" sec-type="section"> <title>Results</title> <p>Findings indicated that nurses and physicians tended to use status‐based communication styles and rarely employed team‐centered communication strategies.</p> </sec> <sec id="jogn12486-sec-0070" sec-type="section"> <title>Conclusion</title> <p>Nurse and physician status‐based communication styles may hinder optimal patient outcomes.</p> </sec> </abstract>
