<abstract abstract-type="main"> <title>ABSTRACT</title> <p>The present study describes the preparation and characterization of the Tween 80/Span 80 and sunflower oil–based organogels. Organogels were characterized using microscopy, X‐ray diffraction, thermal, mechanical, and electrical techniques. The properties were found to be dependent on the proportion of the water : surfactant mixture. The <italic>in vitro</italic> drug release studies were performed under electrical potential. The drug release in the presence of electrical current was compared with the passive drug release. The drug release from the organogels followed the zero‐order kinetics suggesting diffusion mediated release. The preliminary results suggested that the organogels may be used as drug carriers in iontophoretic drug delivery. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym.
