- <abstract abstract-type="main" id="jpy12223-abs-0001"> <title> <x xml:space="preserve">Abstract</x> </title> <p>The diversity of the bladed species of the red algal order Bangiales from the Iberian Mediterranean shores has been reassessed after a detailed study of this region. Prior to this study, 11 bladed species of Bangiales had been reported from Mediterranean waters: <italic>Porphyra atropurpurea</italic>, <italic> P. cordata</italic>, <italic> P. coriacea</italic>, <italic> P. dioica</italic>, <italic> P. linearis</italic>, <italic> P. purpurea</italic>, <italic> P. umbilicalis</italic>, <italic> Pyropia leucosticta</italic>, <italic> Pyropia</italic> <italic>koreana</italic> (as <italic>P</italic>. <italic>olivii</italic>), <italic>Py. elongata</italic> (as <italic>P. rosengurttii</italic>) and <italic>Py. suborbiculata</italic>. A combined analysis of the nuclear nSSU and the plastid <italic>rbc</italic>L genes together with detailed morphological studies has confirmed the presence of species within the genera <italic>Porphyra</italic> and <italic>Pyropia</italic> and also revealed a third, undescribed genus, <italic>Themis</italic> gen. nov. <italic>Porphyra linearis</italic>, <italic> Pyropia elongata</italic> and the introduced <italic>Pyropia koreana</italic> had been previously listed for the Mediterranean and were recorded in this study. This new floristic Bangiales composition confirms the importance of the Mediterranean basin as a hotspot for biodiversity, possible endemics of ancient origin and high proportion of introductions.
