Abstract

<abstract abstract-type="main" id="syen12089-abs-0001"> <title>Abstract</title> <p id="syen12089-para-0001">The systematics of the European species of <italic>Eupelmus</italic> (<italic>Eupelmus</italic>) Dalman (Hymenoptera: Eupelmidae) belonging to the '<italic>urozonus</italic>‐complex' is elucidated through combined molecular and morphological characterization. One mitochondrial gene fragment (<italic>Cytochrome oxidase I</italic>) and one nuclear protein‐coding gene fragment (<italic>Wingles</italic>s) were sequenced and the results compared with those of a detailed morphological study of the specimens from an extensive sampling. Knowledge of the biodiversity of <italic>Eupelmus</italic> in the Western Palearctic Region is significantly improved through the separation and description of 11 new species: <italic>E.</italic> (<italic>Eupelmus</italic>) <italic>confusus</italic> Al khatib <bold>sp.n.</bold>, <italic>E. gemellus</italic> Al khatib <bold>sp.n.</bold>, <italic>E. janstai</italic> Delvare & Gibson <bold>sp.n.</bold>, <italic>E. longicalvus</italic> Al khatib & Fusu <bold>sp.n.</bold>, <italic>E. minozonus</italic> Delvare <bold>sp.n.</bold>, <italic>E. opacus</italic> Delvare <bold>sp.n.</bold>, <italic>E. pistaciae</italic> Al khatib <bold>sp.n.</bold>, <italic>E. priotoni</italic> Delvare <bold>sp.n.</bold>, <italic>E. purpuricollis</italic> Fusu & Al khatib <bold>sp.n.</bold>, <italic>E. simizonus</italic> Al khatib <bold>sp.n.</bold> and <italic>E. tremulae</italic> Delvare <bold>sp.n.</bold> Illustrated keys to females and, when known, males of these new 11 species plus the other already described species considered to belong to the '<italic>urozonus</italic>‐complex' (<italic>E</italic>. <italic>acinellus</italic> Askew, <italic>E. annulatus</italic> Nees, <italic>E. azureus</italic> Ratzeburg, <italic>E. cerris</italic> Förster, <italic>E. fulvipes</italic> Förster, <italic>E. kiefferi</italic> De Stefani, <italic>E. martellii</italic> Masi, <italic>E. stenozonus</italic> Askew, <italic>E. tibicinis</italic> Bouček and <italic>E. urozonus</italic> Dalman) are provided and all the species are described based on morphology. <italic>Eupelmus kiefferi</italic> is removed from synonymy under <italic>E. urozonus</italic> and <italic>E. azureus</italic> is recognized as the valid senior synonym of <italic>Pteromalus cordairii</italic> Ratzeburg, <xref ref-type="link" rid="syen12089-bib-0081">1844</xref> and <italic>Eupelmus spongipartus</italic> Förster, <xref ref-type="link" rid="syen12089-bib-0033">1860</xref><bold>syn.n.</bold> The discrimination of the species included in this complex is particularly relevant because some are potential biological control agents and have been confused in the past.</p> <p id="syen12089-para-0002">This published work has been registered in ZooBank, <ext-link ext-link-type="uri" xlink:href="http://zoobank.org/urn:lsid:zoobank.org:pub:F52CD199-C65F-43CC-B347-4E724096F2D5" xlink:type="simple" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">http://zoobank.org/urn:lsid:zoobank.org:pub:F52CD199‐C65F‐43CC‐B347‐4E724096F2D5</ext-link>.</p> </abstract>
