Abstract

<abstract abstract-type="main" id="ppa12194-abs-0001"> <title> <x xml:space="preserve">Abstract</x> </title> <p>Isolates of an unknown <italic>Phytophthora</italic> species from the '<italic>Phytophthora citricola</italic> complex' have been found associated with mortality of <italic>Aucuba japonica</italic> in the UK. Based on morphological characteristics, growth–temperature relationships, sequences of five DNA regions and pathogenicity assays, the proposed novel species is described as <italic>Phytophthora pachypleura</italic>. Being homothallic with paragynous antheridia and semipapillate sporangia, <italic>P. pachypleura</italic> resembles other species in the '<italic>P. citricola</italic> complex' but can be discriminated by its distinctively thick‐walled oospores with an oospore wall index of 0·71. In the phylogenetic analysis based on three nuclear (ITS, β‐tubulin, <italic>EF‐1α</italic>) and two mitochondrial (<italic>cox1</italic>, <italic> nadh1</italic>) DNA regions, <italic>P. pachypleura</italic> formed a distinct clade within the '<italic>P. citricola</italic> complex' with <italic>P. citricola s. str</italic>., <italic>P. citricola</italic> E and <italic>P. acerina</italic> as its closest relatives. <italic>Phytophthora pachypleura</italic> is more aggressive to <italic>A. japonica</italic> than <italic>P. plurivora</italic> and <italic>P. multivora</italic> and has the potential to affect other ornamental species.</p> </abstract>
