Previously considered to be a passive barrier, MECs are now recognized to play a more active role under physiological and pathophysiological conditions in the brain. Here, MECs express the danger signal receptor TLR4 and are involved in immunological processes in the cerebrospinal fluid through the phagocytosis of bacteria. <boxed-text content-type="graphic" position="anchor" orientation="portrait"><graphic position="anchor" mimetype="image" xlink:href="ark:/27927/pgh190vc4z3" orientation="portrait" xlink:type="simple" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink" /></boxed-text></p>
