- <abstract abstract-type="main"> <title>ABSTRACT</title> <p>Alkaline–surfactant–polymer (ASP) flooding is a combination process in which alkali, surfactant, and polymer are injected in the same slug. Because of the synergy of these three components, ASP is the current worldwide focus of research and field trial in chemical enhanced oil recovery (EOR).</p> <p>This paper is to provide a comprehensive review of the ASP process. The reviewed topics include the following: <list id="apj1824-list-0001" list-type="bullet"><list-item id="apj1824-li-0001"><p>ASP synergy and its EOR mechanisms</p></list-item><list-item id="apj1824-li-0002"><p>Screening criteria</p></list-item><list-item id="apj1824-li-0003"><p>Laboratory work</p></list-item><list-item id="apj1824-li-0004"><p>Numerical simulation work</p></list-item><list-item id="apj1824-li-0005"><p>Summary of pilots and large‐scale applications</p></list-item><list-item id="apj1824-li-0006"><p>Project economics</p></list-item><list-item id="apj1824-li-0007"><p>Chemicals used</p></list-item><list-item id="apj1824-li-0008"><p>Water quality</p></list-item><list-item id="apj1824-li-0009"><p>Mobility control requirement</p></list-item><list-item id="apj1824-li-0010"><p>Problems associated with ASP flooding and possible solutions</p></list-item></list></p> <p>In addition to the comprehensive review, future developments are also discussed.
