- <abstract abstract-type="main"> <title>SUMMARY</title> <p>In a multi‐infeed high‐voltage direct current (HVDC) system, fault at the inverter side of converter stations might cause power converse to the AC lines. The adverse impact of the power converse is that, external faults might lead to tripping of non‐fault lines installed with directional comparison pilot protections, even outage of HVDC systems. In this paper, the causes and solutions of the traditional power converse are introduced and discussed. The mechanism of power converse due to commutation failure is analyzed. The major reason of the power converse caused by commutation failure is that the demand for reactive power increases rapidly during fault recovery. An AC‐DC interconnected power system model for a multi‐infeed HVDC system is established with software EMTDC. The simulation result shows that, if a severe fault occurs at the AC side of a multi‐infeed system with short electrical distance to two converter stations, it may lead to commutation failure in both converter stations simultaneously, the power converse of AC lines adjacent to inverter stations, even the maloperation of pilot protection. The demonstration also shows that the faults of HVDC transmission lines are less likely to cause the power converse. A practical solution is proposed and validated to resolve pilot protection maloperation. Copyright © 2013 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.</p> </abstract>
