Abstract

<abstract abstract-type="main" id="jmp12127-abs-0001"> <title>Abstract</title> <sec id="jmp12127-sec-0001" sec-type="section"> <title>Background</title> <p>Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) is the abnormal thickening of the ventricles and an increase in cardiac mass.</p> </sec> <sec id="jmp12127-sec-0002" sec-type="section"> <title>Methods</title> <p>Pedigree analyses involving 108 rhesus macaques with pronounced HCM were performed.</p> </sec> <sec id="jmp12127-sec-0003" sec-type="section"> <title>Results</title> <p>Analyses revealed a strong genetic predisposition to this disease.</p> </sec> <sec id="jmp12127-sec-0004" sec-type="section"> <title>Conclusions</title> <p>Macaques are ideal for investigating HCM because of their marked similarity to humans genetically, physiologically, and anatomically.</p> </sec> </abstract>
