<abstract abstract-type="graphical" xml:lang="en" id="smll201303263-abs-0001"> <title> <x xml:space="preserve">Abstract</x> </title> <p> <bold>An ancient material for magnetic resonance (MR) imaging:</bold> For the first time, Fe₅C₂ is prepared as colloidal stable nanoparticles with good aqueous stability. The nanoparticles boast strong magnetization, excellent chemical inertness, low toxicity, and one of the highest <italic>r₂</italic> relaxivities reported to date.
