<abstract abstract-type="short"> <title> <x xml:space="preserve">Abstract</x> </title> <p> <bold>What's already known about this topic?</bold> <list id="pd4313-list-1001" list-type="bullet"> <list-item id="pd4313-li-1001"> <p>Inhibin‐A is a useful marker in screening for Down syndrome in the second trimester of pregnancy.</p> </list-item> <list-item id="pd4313-li-2002"> <p>It is known to be about 50% higher among women who state they smoke compared with women who state they do not smoke.</p> </list-item> <list-item id="pd4313-li-3003"> <p>A single adjustment factor has been used in antenatal screening programmes.</p> </list-item> </list> </p> <p> <bold>What does this study add?</bold> <list id="pd4313-list-1002" list-type="bullet"> <list-item id="pd4313-li-4004"> <p>This study shows that the extent of the effect of smoking on Inhibin‐A is dependent on the gestational age of the pregnancy.</p> </list-item> <list-item id="pd4313-li-5005"> <p>The extent of the effect increases from about 20% higher at early gestation (14 weeks) to about 70% higher at later gestations (20 weeks).</p> </list-item> <list-item id="pd4313-li-6006"> <p>An equation allowing the effect of gestation to be considered is presented.</p> </list-item> </list> </p> </abstract>
