<abstract abstract-type="graphical" xml:lang="en" id="boc201300037-gra-0001"> <title>Research article</title> <p>The ciliated <italic>Tetrahymena thermophila</italic> has a unique apoptosis‐like nuclear event during conjugation, called programmed nuclear death (PND). In the death process, only the parental macronucleus is selectively eliminated from the progeny cytoplasm and mitochondria play a crucial role. A novel protein TMN1 localised in mitochondria was identified as a nuclease or nuclease‐associated protein, and knockout of the <italic>TMN1</italic> gene led to a drastic reduction of mitochondrial nuclease activity and the blocking of nuclear degradation, indicating that TMN1 is a major executor involved in PND. <boxed-text content-type="graphic" position="anchor" orientation="portrait"><graphic position="anchor" mimetype="image" xlink:href="ark:/27927/pgg4ss0mm0m" orientation="portrait" xlink:type="simple" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink" /></boxed-text></p> </abstract>
