Abstract

<abstract abstract-type="graphical" xml:lang="en"> <title> <x xml:space="preserve">Abstract</x> </title> <p> <italic> <bold>When DNA is encapsulated</bold> </italic> in a silica sphere, the encoded information can be protected for storage and distribution, much in the way a bottle protects the message inside from the rough sea. As R. N. Grass et al. describe in their Communication on <ext-link ext-link-type="doi" xlink:type="simple" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">page 4269 ff.</ext-link>, a silica layer only 10 nm thick is sufficient to protect DNA from high temperatures and aggressive radical conditions.
