<abstract abstract-type="graphical" xml:lang="en" id="ppsc201370022-abs-0001"> <title> <x xml:space="preserve">Abstract</x> </title> <p>Public imagination will be captured by this novel application of ruby, a common gemstone, now attracting the excitement of frontier, crossdisciplinary nanoscience. In this issue Andrei V. Zvyagin and co‐workers report on page 506 that ruby has been carved into nanoparticles by femtosecond laser ablation allowing harnessing truly special qualities of ruby at the nanoscale for which the name "nano‐ruby" was coined.
