Abstract

<abstract abstract-type="main"> <title>ABSTRACT</title> <p>This article presented a dual‐band monopole antenna fed by a 50‐Q microstrip line for wireless local area network applications. The antenna consists of a square patch as radiator and slotted conductor‐backed plane which can generate dual‐band operations. The slotted conductor‐backed plane produces two resonant bands at about 2.4 GHz for the 802.11b standard and 5 GHz for the upper band of the 802.11a. By adjusting the positions and the lengths of these structures of slots on the conductor‐backed plane, two different current paths can be obtained at different frequency bands. The designed antenna has a small overall size of 15 × 15 mm², and operates over the frequency ranges, 2.4–2.5 GHz and 4.2–7.5 GHz suitable, which can cover the frequency bands from 2.4 to 2.484 GHz, for the 802.11b standard and from 5.15 to 5.35 GHz (the lower band) and from 5.725 to 5.825 GHz (the higher band) for the 802.11a standard. Simulation and measurement results of the proposed antenna show good agreements. Experimental results show that the proposed dual‐band antenna has good characteristics in terms of radiation pattern and gains. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
